Half-timbered house “Zur Post” in Biesfeld

Version dated January 25, 2021

At the end of the 18th century, Wilhelm Frielingsdorf and his wife Anna Sybilla Neuenhaus settled in Biesfeld and built the "Alte Post" inn around 1790. The elongated two-storey half-timbered house, plastered quarry stone base with sandstone covering and gabled roof was built as a typical mountain half-timbered house in a post and beam construction. The beams, struts and supports of the half-timbered structure are painted black and their fanning is painted white. The white door and window reveals, white mullioned windows and green shutters are also typical of the Berg region. The western gable (weather side) is slated.

In the 1920s, the inn was already called "Zur Post". In addition to an inn, it also operated a general store and a post office. The post office became more important when the road from Mühlheim (Cologne) to Wipperfürth was built between 1847 and 1853. In an outbuilding set back on the east side, there was a so-called "Krautpasche" (for the production of apple cabbage) and the post office, which was moved out of the main building into a small annex. The Krautpasche was still in operation until the 1950s. There was a bowling alley on the west side facing the former vicarage. The general store on the right-hand side of the building was closed in 1968.

The restaurant, which remained until the end, was closed in 2004 after the death of innkeeper Josef Küster. After a thorough renovation and new extensions, the restaurant was reopened in 2008. The restaurant and hotel were new. The taproom on the left-hand side of the building has largely retained its original state. Unfortunately, the old bar has been replaced and is now located in a supermarket in Bergisch-Gladbach-Sand. A plaque with historical data can be found on a wall in a guest room of the restaurant.

The building was listed in 1994. The five old lime trees in front of the street-side building front also have monument value or nature conservation value in connection with the building (monument no.: 123).
